Relay drinking games are quite popular for parties like bachelor or bachelorette parties, office parties, and more.
I was writing a post on fun drinking games for small groups which led me down the path to writing this post on Relay Drinking game races since the two are quite similar.
If you are not familiar with a relay race, it is a competition where teams take turns completing an assigned task or series of tasks. The team that finishes first wins the race.
Relay Drinking Games can be played with as few as two people on each team, but they are often played with more than 5-10 people per team.
When it comes to picking the right relay race ideas for your party, it can be quite hard, since there are so many different types of games out there. But, no matter what type of party you are throwing, we are sure that you will find the perfect game on our list.
Here is my list of hilarious Relay Drinking games for adults this year:
Christmas Relay Race in sumo suits with drunk goggles on
This is one of the most popular relay race ideas for adults.
I’ve been utilizing Sumo suits for relay races in recent years, but I had a stroke of genius when I decided to add Drunk Goggles into the equation back in 2015. To this day, almost 7 years later, it is still one of the best drinking obstacle course ideas for adults in 2022.
Here’s how you play the sumo relay race:
- Each team gets a sumo suit and a set of drunk goggles.
- One member of each team puts on the sumo suit and the goggles, then makes their way through an obstacle course. The drunk goggles will make it hard to see, so the team will have to rely on their communication skills to get through the course.
- At the end of the obstacle course, the player has to drink a beer or a shot and then return back through the course.
- Once the team member has made it through the course, they will then take off the sumo suit and pass it on to the next team member who will put it on and make their way through the course.
The first team to complete the course wins the game.
What you need to play the game:
- Sumo suits (2-4 suits depending on the number of teams)
- Drunk goggles (2-4 suits depending on the number of teams)
- An obstacle course (can be made from sandbags, tires, cones, or anything else you have around the house)
- Beer or Shots
Fun relay games for large groups on unicorns or pony hoppers
The pony hoppers relay race is huge in the United States and in Europe Unicorn races have really been taking off as well. There is no doubt about this is one of the most popular relay race ideas for adults.
If you want to know how to play the relay race on unicorns, here’s what you need to do:
- Each team gets a unicorn or a pony hopper.
- One member of each team mounts the unicorn or pony hopper, then makes their way to the other end of the course. This might sound easy, but it really isn’t.
- At the end of the course, the player has to drink a beer or a shot and then return back through the course.
- Once the team member has made it through the course, they will then dismount the unicorn or pony hopper and pass it on to the next team member who will put it on and make their way through the course.
- The first team to complete the course wins the game.
Pro tip: Adding control posts along the way where players have to do a certain task before they are allowed to continue can make the game even more fun. Just remember not to make the course to long, since the players will be getting tired quickly.
What you need to play the game:
- Unicorns or pony hoppers (2-4 depending on the number of teams)
- An open space (a large backyard or a park would be perfect)
- Beer or Shots
- Drunk goggles (optional)

Beer Relay drinking game without props
The Beer Relay drinking game is a game without props, so it is fairly easy to set up the game. There is only one thing you need, and that’s a huge load of beers.
The Beer relay drinking game is played between two or more teams and requires the players to be split into teams of equal count. At the starting line, a player from each team runs to the other end of the field and drinks a beer, after which he or she must run ten times in circles around the beer bottle or can, before returning to the next player who will do likewise. The first team to finish wins.
Here is how you play the game:
- Two teams (or more teams if needed) of players compete against each other.
- One member of each team starts by running from the starting line and 30 feet down the course to pick up a bottle, or can of beer and chugs it.
- After the player has chugged the beer, they have to run around the bottle in circles 10 times before running back to the starting line and tagging the next player on their team.
- The next player then repeats the process.
- The first team with all of their players finishing the race wins.
What you need for this game:
- A bout load of Beers
- An open space (a park or a large backyard would work great)
